Student Stories: Samples from our Creative Writing Classes

In preparation for the 11+ exams, our students completed a writing task from a Sevenoaks School past paper. Children were asked to continue an extract from a story called Formica. One student\’s work is shown below. This was a homework task and therefore completed entirely independently.
The ashtray was bottle green, with significant dents in its sides. It was partly grey with all of the cigarette ash and ends covering the bottom like a blanket over a sleeping baby. His mother was biting her fingernails and discreetly praying for his health to be okay.

As a result of my failure in a bet with my friend, Kieran, I was forced into being sent to the sinister graveyard in the dead of night. I stood reluctantly at the entrance of the graveyard and felt a chill down my spine as a dozen pumpkins laughed menacingly at my forfeit. As I trod on the muddy ground, a soft hush of wind blew a pile of crisp autumn leaves in my path.
I viewed a haunted house a few yards in front of me, its brick walls crumbling from years of neglect, with shattered windows that I imagined had been broken as the monsters held within attempted to escape. Most frighteningly of all, the house’s dark oak door swung back, tempting me to take a step inside. Out of nowhere, I heard a deafening screech, followed by the sensation of being watched.
