KS1 Essential Kit for Learning

As your child begins to learn with use, there are a few things it would be useful for you to have at home in order to develop their abilities further outside of classes.

The list below contains the types of equipment they might benefit from having.

1.  Numicon

Numicon frames are used a lot during classes to help with first introducing your child to number and simple arithmetic. Numicon is useful as it allows your child to visualise numbers and understand the ‘tens’ and ‘units’ components which make up a number.

Our post about using Numicon at home to extend learning can be found here.

A set of Numicon can be purchased on Amazon and we recommend that you have at least two sets of 1-10 frames and a set of ten 10 frames.

2. Magnetic Letters

Another set which is often used in class, magnetic letters are useful for young children as they allow then to practice spelling and writing by rearranging the letters and then copying down the word they have spelt.

We use the cursive set of letter which can also be purchased on amazon. A standard set of magnetic letters can be purchased here.

3. Chubby Pencils/ Colouring Pencils

Thick barrelled pencils are a good idea for children who are just starting to write. They usually have indents to help teach correct grip and the thick lead means that it does not easily break if a child accidentally presses too hard on the paper.

A set of chubby pencils can be purchased on Amazon here.

4. Toy Clock

We use these type of clocks in class when children are learning to tell the time. They allow the children to move the hands easily and learn the value of the minutes at each part of the circumference, as they have the minute values as well as the hour numbers or small cards which can be placed around the edge.

Read our Blog Post on teaching your child to tell time here.

A clock very similar to that used in our classes can be purchased on Amazon here.
